Autumn & winter 2026 in Florida
Spending the fall and early winter in Florida with a gradual easing of summer resulting in warm afternoons, softer sunlight, earlier sunsets, and increasingly comfortable evenings make it easier to walk and photograph nature. Depending on the latitude North Florid has cooler mornings, occasionally crisp evenings, and some autumn color. Central Florida warm days with refreshing breaks.
Beyond the weather, Florida’s fall and early winter atmosphere comes through its plants, wildlife, and changing light.
Palms, pines, and live oaks keep much of the landscape green. In northern Florida, sweetgum and maple leaves add patches of red and gold, while bald cypress trees turn rusty brown before shedding their needles. Goldenrods, asters, and grasses bring autumn color to roadsides and open land. Farther south, gardens can remain colorful with flowers well into winter.
Migrating birds make wetlands, beaches, and ponds feel especially lively. Ducks and other winter visitors arrive, joining resident herons, egrets, and pelicans. As water cools alligators, turtles, and snakes become less active during chilly spells, although sunny afternoons can bring them back out.
