India - Khajuraho
After visiting the parks of Corbett and Tadoba some years ago with mixed results we now have been fortunate to book with Nature Safari India Pvt Ltd a 2-week trip to deepen our encounter with the Bengal tiger of India. Attended by Neeraja Bipin the excellent communication during our stay has been an important part of the success and our wellbeing.
We started in New Delhi with a six-and-a-half-hour train ride to Khajuraho a small town in central India with a population of about 10.000. Khajuraho has a peaceful rural charm, rich local culture, traditional lifestyle, and beautiful natural surroundings, making it a place where history and everyday Indian life meet. It is famous for its stunning group of medieval Hindu and Jain temples. From the 85 temples built original between 950–1050 CE by the Chandela dynasty some 23 remain. Rediscovered in the 19th century by British surveyors after being hidden by forests there is the
Western Group: Kandariya Mahadeva Temple, Lakshmana Temple – Dedicated to Vishnu, Vishwanath Temple – Dedicated to Shiva
Eastern Group: Jain temples like Parshvanatha Temple
Southern Group: Includes Duladeo Temple
Detailed stone carvings depicting daily life scenes, mythological figures, divine beings and celestial dancers and erotic sculptures, which form only a small part. These carvings symbolize human emotions, spirituality, and the path to enlightenment.
