Andújar

is a city located in the province of Jaén, in Andalusia, Spain known for The Sierra de Andújar Natural Park and the Sanctuary of the Virgen de la Cabeza.

The Iberian lynx has one of its most important populations in the world in Andújar. It lives mainly in the Sierra de Andújar Natural Park. It is the most endangered feline in Europe and depends almost exclusively on rabbits, hares, small mammals, and birds for food.

It was one of the last refuges when the species was on the verge of extinction (fewer than 100 individuals remained in 2002). The recovery of the Iberian lynx began in the 2000s, concentrated mainly in the Sierra de Andújar and Doñana Natural Parks.

Key to the recovery were captive breeding and the reintroduction and recovery of the rabbit population (its main prey). Today, some 900 lynxes are counted in the Park and more than 2,400 in the Spanish Peninsula.

The Eurasian otter is relatively common in Jean.
